What is the normal range of PSA?
PSA is measured as a blood test. Many, but not all, physicians feel that measuring PSA on a regular basis picks up prostate cancer earlier and saves lives; however, considerable debate still exists within the medical community about whether PSA screening is useful.
Those who endorse PSA screening recommend that men over the age of 50 years get a PSA test and a rectal exam annually. Screening advocates recommend that the annual PSA test commence at the age of 40 years in high-risk groups such as men with a family history of prostate cancer or African American men. The normal range of PSA is considered to be between 0 and 4 ng/ml.
