Man In The Pink Shirt – by an anonymous patient

What is Oncoplastic Surgery?
In oncoplastic surgery, a tumor is removed and immediate reconstruction is performed to ensure satisfactory cosmetic results.
Sometimes a flap of tissue with its blood supply and nerves is moved from one area of the body to another, and through delicate and careful surgical techniques, the breast is reconstructed. Sometimes oncoplastic surgery may require a reduction mammoplasty, or breast reduction in the unaffected breast, to ensure symmetry. Sometimes mammopexy, or breast lift, is also done on the unaffected breast. This helps the breasts to appear symmetrical. Sometimes nipples are removed. Multiple surgeons are often involved in this process.
Although surgeons and patients hope for excellent cosmetic results, sometimes the surgical effect is less favorable than expected. Some interventions, such as Scarguard, may be used to lessen the intensity and color of the scars. Sometimes nipples can be reconstructed by other tissue or permanent tattooing done in the nipple area. Sometimes prostheses may be available. If you are unhappy with the way your new breasts look or want to consider reconstructive surgery, ask your healthcare team for a plastic surgery consultation. There are new and innovative ways to help your breasts regain their vitality they once had.
Ask questions. Ask to see books with results, and ask whether your healthcare professionals have had experience with reconstructive surgery in breast cancer patients.
