What is herbal medicine?
It is the use of herbs and plants to treat illnesses. Herbal remedies have been used since ancient times to treat a variety of disorders. It may be the roots, leaves, stem or seed that are used to make the preparation but they are used whole, unlike conventional drugs that just use the active ingredients.
There are different types of herbal medicine, such as Western Herbal Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. You can get some herbs over the counter, or see a practitioner, who will prescribe a mixture specially suited to you.
Can herbal remedies be used to treat breast cancer?
There is no strong evidence to suggest that herbal remedies can be effective in treating breast cancer. Some conventional medicines come from plants, such as the vinca alkaloids used to treat leukemia and other cancers but this is not the same as simply taking an herbal remedy for treatment.
Can I use herbal remedies to help with side effects of conventional treatment?
Some people find that nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy may be reduced by the use of some herbs. Others believe that fatigue may be relieved and the immune system may be supported. Herbal medicine may also help with menopausal symptoms caused by chemotherapy and hormone treatments, but do check with your specialist team.
If herbs are effective as medicine, does that mean they can also be dangerous?
Herbal remedies are classed as foodstuffs and are not controlled in the same way as medicines. This means that they do not need to be subjected to clinical trials and the preparations are not prepared to a given standard. Not all remedies are considered safe and some have been withdrawn because of concerns about effects on health or interactions with certain drugs. A qualified medical herbalist will know what may be helpful for you. You should always discuss using herbal remedies with your doctor or breast care nurse before you start this therapy.
Do herbalists have to be trained?
Yes, there are degree courses for people who wish to become practitioners.
Are herbal remedies available on the NHS?
No, they are not. You need to find a private practitioner and, to do this, you should contact a professional association to get the name of a qualified practitioner.
