What type of healthcare professional is trained to help women with these issues?

Marriage and family therapists focus on the psychological dynamics of couple relationships and the broad array of sexual challenges that many couples face.

Sex therapists, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and/or social workers have had specific training about sexuality and can address complex issues in an efficient manner.

To assure quality in a sexual health provider, look for certification of the American Association of Sex Educators Counselors and Therapists, which is the certifying body for sexual health specialists. Certification, a voluntary activity, is often a lengthy process and requires evidence of specialized training, hours of patient contact, and verification of competency in the field of sexual health by other sexual health specialists. Also, sexual counselors and sexual therapists, as well as medical doctors and nurse providers, specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of sexual complaints from breast cancer patients. A good reference may be the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health, as well as American Cancer Society.

The International Society of Sexual Medicine may also be helpful when you are trying to locate a healthcare provider who is sensitive to sexual health, wellness, and cancer care.
